First Presidential News Conference

These are some of the quick notes I took while watching the conference:

Lost so far, since last month, the equivalence to every job in ME

Save/create 4 mil jobs
Working class jobs (including green energy jobs)

Money for college tuition

Give money to those who’ll spend it and raise the economy

Investment in health care, infrastructure, etc

QUESTION SECTION
[Slow zooming – may be inadvertently adding dramatic effect and integrity to the president and his claims]

The president slightly cut off some of the reporters questions

Noticed that the FOX reporter asked a fairly more critical question than others

Bacteria to Clean Up Oil Spills

http://science.howstuffworks.com/color-coded-bacteria.htm

This article is about a genetically altered bacteria that will help in the cleaning of oil spills. The bacteria seeks out the toxic waste and gets rid of it and it also makes the toxic material luminescent so it can be identified by scientists. This could save money on cleanup costs but because it is genetically altered there are government restrictions on it. The bacteria is also limited in reproductive properties. So this may not be the perfect solution but it is helpful.

Cooking Oil Fuel in NY County

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/08/nyregion/westchester/08greasewe.html?_r=1&ref=earth

Although this article isn't actually about new technology it is about a new effort to use that technology. With Westchester county using cooking oil from local restaurants to fuel some of their vehicles they are following some big trends. Not only are they "going green" but they are saving money doing it. With the country in economic slump, it would seem difficult to make environmentally friendly changes a priority. But, this county was able to make some of these helpful changes with their eyes on the eventual long-term money savings.

More Energy Efficient Stadium

http://greeninc.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/02/01/efficiency-and-recycling-at-the-super-bowl/?scp=1&sq=eco%20friendly&st=cse

This is a short article but it gets to the point. The stadium where the superbowl took place saved a lot of money and energy. This is just another example of the fashionable trend of energy saving and eco-friendly ideas everywhere. In end it allows them to charge less for their services which would seem to make this a very popular idea.

I think simply the fact that this article exists, even if it's so short, says a lot about where peoples priorities are. The population seems to want to know that people are taking more and more enviornmentally friendly steps.

Wal-Mart Using Hybrid Trucks

http://gas2.org/2009/02/03/wal-mart-tests-diesel-hybrid-trucks-alternative-fuels/

This article is about Wal-marts testing of new alternative fuel running trucks in their fleet. They are trying out some of the first ever "dual-mode deisel hybrids" and biodiesel fuel on their three axle trucks. I think this could be an obvious step in the right direction if their tests are successful.

I found this article interesting because it is actually in a sort of blog format. However, it is still fact based and seems unbiased.

Renewable Gas Heating in the UK

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7862696.stm#top

This article describes a possible new source of fuel that is more eco-friendly than traditional gas heating. By burning waste they can obtain gasses from the process to heat homes. This will save fossil fuels and create a use for the waste in landfills. One of the downsides it mentions is that if this gas leaks it's 20 times more damaging to the enviornment than CO2.

This seems like a very viable solution to me. It would lower heating costs and, overall, be more friendly to the enviornment. However, conclusions about this must take into consideration the part of the article titled "Over-optimistic" warning about the report being more idealistic than is possible to achieve.

I noticed, on a stylistic note, that this article seems to have a slightly different writing style than some other articles I've read. I was thrown off for a moment when it started the regular article by saying "It says." At first I was unsure of what it refered to. It seems strange to me that the writer of a news article wouldn't make himself perfectly clear.
