This article is about the president's promise to make the White House more green and energy efficient. It describes how the house has been renovated in past administrations and is less of an "energy hog" tha people typically think. Some experts still feel that the White House could be still more eco-friendly and should be used as a model for the nation to follow.

Green Industry
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/01/28/tech/livinggreen/main4759950.shtml
This article is about the profession of weatherizing homes and the change it's seeing. Many people interested in saving money and/or being green are having this done. It is an effective means "to cut residential energy bills, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and create jobs."
It seems that more and more in this economy green activities are being shown as economically friendly instead of environmentally friendly.

EPA on Global Warming
http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/GlobalWarming/WireStory?id=7156284&page=1
This article shows the political and governmental side of environmentalism. Various politicians, senators, and organizations all have something to say on the issue. It would seem that although not all have agreed on policies to be passed so far, some regulations have to go through eventually.

UK: City-living is Green-er?
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/mar/23/city-dwellers-smaller-carbon-footprints
This is an article out of the UK that says that some studies have shown that people living in cities have a smaller carbon footprint than those living in the suburbs. They attribute this to the mass use of public transport and denser living areas.
I thought this would be a good article to include because not only is it about the UK, but it also connects with my blog topic about the environment.

U.S. Birds Endangered
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/20/science/earth/20bird.html?ref=earth
This article is about the release of a study that has found that 1/3 of the U.S.'s 800 species of birds are now endangered. Problems like pollution and habitat destruction have been sited as some causes. On a more positive note, it has been found that species relying on wetlands are bouncing back as wetland conservation increases. This means that if people take action there is hope to reverse these ill-effects before it gets too far.

UK: Criticism of the War
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article5950402.ece
This is an article that shows a view opposed to how the war in Afghanistan is being run in Britain. Even former army officers have complaints. Not only do they feel that their troops are severely ill-equipped but they also disagree with the strategies being used.
I thought I should include an article about troops and the war because I was looking through the site and I saw many articles about it. This seems to be a big topic for the UK or at least it is portrayed that way through the Times Online.

UK: Short Pony
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/mar/12/short-legged-horse-rescue-mayflower
I was planning on finding a more serious article from the UK, but this one caught my eye. It's about a particularly short pony which passers-by often mistakenly think is stuck in the mud. Authorities have already received 4 calls about the animal to be rescued, each one a false alarm.

.eco
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7927812.stm
This is a short article about the creation of a .eco internet domain. Active environmentalist Al Gore is backing the idea. The domain is reportedly going to be created later this year.
I just thought this would be a good article to include because of the impact it will have on the environmentalists portrayal on the internet. It may function a bit like the "j-o" logo by adding validity or at least clarifying the purpose of sites using the domain.

UK: Tongue Biting Girlfriend
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/tyne/7935311.stm
It seems like I was right when I thought I could find some interesting articles out of the UK. This one is a story I found in the UK section of BBC news about a woman who, while drunk, bit off a third of her boyfriend's tongue. The story itself is a bit disturbing but it seems like something that could easily happen in the U.S. The judge in the case brought against her now says she will be facing jail time.

Green Bullets
http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/science/03/04/green.bullets/index.html
This is an article about the potential hazards of lead bullets and the idea of switching to green bullets. These are bullets made without the toxic metal lead and instead are made with non-toxic metals like copper. The argument is that there is a possibility of the lead in bullets contaminating the environment and the meat from animals shot by these bullets. Hunters argue that there is no concrete evidence to suggest this and some scholars feel that the public should be informed of the possibility. Some feel that lead bullets shouldn't necessarily be banned, but rather phased out slowly.
I find it interesting that this article doesn't seem completely unbiased. I feel as if hunters and hunters' associations are being portrayed as a stubborn enemy while the scholars and people going green are justified and right.

Hiring Hydrologists
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/08/jobs/08start.html?_r=1&ref=earth
This is an article about the job of a hydrologist. They make sure that water is clean and safe with regular testings. The article reports that out of all the water in the world, only about 1 percent is drinkable or usable for agriculture. Even that small number is being threatened.
It is interesting to see that in an economic slump, green jobs will still survive and in this case prosper.

European Tariff Update
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/04/business/worldbusiness/04biodiesel.html?_r=1&ref=earth
This is a short article about the pushing forward of a tariff on American biodiesel going into Europe. The article stresses that no final word has been made official yet but it seems to be backed. This would only be temporary, however, because the European governments are the ones with the power to pass this for the long-term.
I thought this would be interesting to add because it is an update on an article I've posted previously. Because it is by the same source the article seems to have the same perspective and general information.

Country: The UK
I would like to follow news from the UK:
http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/europe/02/27/uk.teacher.radioactive/index.html
I think the UK would be an interesting country to follow to see just what parallels there are between their culture and the U.S.'s. We seem to be similar in many ways, but are we? I think it would be good to find out how and what gets reported for their country. I also chose this because I felt that it would be possible to find a more diverse array of media coverage. Instead of having stories about war and government problems I believe I'll be able to find stories more off the beaten path. The story I have linked here for example. This is a story about a man on the lam who is possibly radioactive from medical treatments.

"Green Collar Jobs"
http://www.cnn.com/2009/LIVING/03/02/green.jobs.training/index.html?eref=ib_technology
This is an article about some of the promising economic advantages of green technology. The technology can provide what they call "green collar jobs" to the workforce. Jobs will be arisinglike green technology technicians and energy efficiency experts. These jobs reportedly pay more than the average mechanic or technician jobs, as well.
I find it refreshing that the article also includes a downside to the situation. Although this is good for the economy, the current economic situation makes it difficult to get financing for green projects. If they can't get financing they'll never start and never have the chance to improve the economy.
